Angelina Marie 'Angie' Owens

July 10, 1918 — December 22, 2010

Angelina "Angie" Marie Owens, 92, died peacefully at Maryville Nursing Home in Beaverton. Born July 10, 1918, in Portland, Angie was the only child of Carlo Tonti and Josephine Martell Tonti. She enjoyed close ties to her mother's family, and also to a caring community of neighbors, while growing up in South Portland. She attended Girls Polytechnic High School.

Angie's first husband, Harley A. Benjamin, relocated to Portland from Bloomington, Ill. Together they raised three children in a marriage lasting 48 years. Harley preceded Angie in death in 1983. They enjoyed participating in many fraternal clubs and were members of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, where she was active with the school's Boy Scout troop leadership. She worked in retail for several years; first at Roberts Brothers department store, and then Healthways Natural Foods, both in downtown Portland. Angie and Harley later worked side-by-side owning and operating Benjamin Vending Co., which expanded to serve the Central Oregon coast and Mount Hood recreational areas, including Timberline Lodge. They especially enjoyed Hawaiian vacations with their children and grandchildren.

Angie's second marriage was to Travis C. Owens. They were members of St. Clare Catholic Church; many fraternal and social organizations; held close family ties; and enjoyed outings with friends, dancing, and traveling. This included the first of two trips Angie made to Italy to meet several cousins for the first time. Married for 16 years, Travis preceded Angie in death in 2001. She then lived in Summerfield retirement community in Tigard, where she enjoyed many activities and the ever so wonderful friends she met there. She is remembered for her generosity, kindness, and ability to uplift spirits.

Angie is survived by her sons, Ronald Benjamin (wife, Janet) and Paul Benjamin (wife, Mary); daughters, Diane Kothenbeutel (husband, Richard); Cathy Spencer (husband, Lane); and Dorene Ludlow; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Prior to interment, an informal memorial service, open to all, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, in the chapel at Riverview Abbey Funeral Home, 319 S.W. Taylors Ferry Road, Portland; 503-244-7577. At the end of her life, Angie was wonderfully cared for at the Sisters of St. Mary, Maryville Nursing Home.
