James L. Stracner, known to his Arkansas relatives as Jimmy Leon but to all the rest of us as Jim, passed away October 5th, 2018 at home from a short fight with cancer at the age of 75. He was born on September 29th, 1943 in Morrilton, Arkansas, to Leo and Claudia Stracner but was raised from toddler age in Salinas, California. He was the oldest of three children and learned from an early age the value of hard work, joining his father in the produce packing sheds and fields in Salinas.

Those days of working in the produce sheds served Jim throughout his career, managing retail stores for Pay-N-Save (a branch of Safeway) and PV Ranch and Home. After serving in the leadership roles of these retail stores, Jim realized his vision of owning a business that also served the Lord. When Jim opened Christian Music and Video in 1989, it was the first of it’s kind. The focus was on providing the largest selection of gospel music of any musical style to meet the needs of all age groups. CMV expanded over the next four years to a total of three stores across Northern California. During the nine years Jim owned the company, he earned the reputation throughout the industry of being a man of integrity and a man who understood successful retail. He had created and maintained a model for other stores in this field.

Also, Jim was a personally committed follower of Christ. In 1983 and 1984, he participated in missions trips to Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Peru. On these trips, Jim along with other members of the team of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, ministered to hundreds of people and witnessed the miracles of the Holy Spirit. During the 30 years of residency in Chico, he attended several area churches but found a church home and membership at 1st Assembly of God, in Chico, CA.

Working in retail, with the demands of long hours, did not allow Jim the time to be the on-hands father he would liked to have been. But Jim’s love and appreciation for his seven children was very real. He spoke of his children recognizing the way each had developed their abilities, their unique personalities, how they excelled in their vocations in life and character. Birthday cards were usually signed, “I’m proud of you and I love you very much” which may have seemed repetitive but it was written from the heart.

In retirement, Jim purchased a small fifty year old cabin in the Mill Creek Summer Home area and proceeded to completely repair and improve the home. During the improvement and afterward, Jim spent week after week at the cabin. The first thing he did every morning was to put out the United States flag. He never tired of the opportunity to spend time out of door enjoying this blessing we in America have.

During the first week of September, Jim was diagnosed with cancer. From then until he left this life one month later for his new one in eternity, the deterioration was incredibly fast. A scripture that was forefront at that time was the NIV reading of 2 Corinthians 4:16 which reads “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” Cancer may have destroyed his body, but never his spirit.

Jim is missed and will continue to be missed by his wife, Juanelle (Hall), son Terry of Madras, OR, daughter Michelle of Forest Grove, OR., daughter Heather of Battle Ground, WA, son Matt of San Diego, CA., daughter Heidi of Portland, OR., daughter Jami of Salt Lake City, UT., and James L. II (Jimmy) of Tracy, CA. along with their spouses, twelve grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. From his own birth family he is survived by his only sister, Gloria Jean of Chico, two nephews a niece and three grandnieces. He was predeceased by both parents and a younger brother, Danny Stracner of Salinas.

Flowers are acceptable but there will also be opportunity to make a donation. A trust for providing Bibles (The Fire Bible) in overseas outreaches will be set up in his name, through Newton-Bracewell and Jim’s home church. A memorial will be held on Saturday, October 13th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Newton-Bracewell.
