Eldora L. “Dody” Manchester died May 11, 2010 at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. She was born April 23, 1917 on Peaks Island, ME a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Doughty) Lidback.

She grew up in Maine and graduated from Gorham Normal School in 1937 before beginning her career in education. She was married to Warren M. Manchester October 22, 1944 in Biloxi, MS. They moved to the Upper Valley region of Vermont in the late 1940’s before settling in Sharon in 1956 where she spent the rest of her life.

She served the Hartford School District for over 35 years. First teaching second grade and later the sixth grade in White River Junction and then as principal and curriculum supervisor at the Middle School and retired as a teaching principal at the Quechee Elementary School in 1981. In addition to her normal duties she played an instrumental part in establishing the district’s special education school in Quechee. After retiring she continued to volunteer with the Hartford schools. Mrs. Manchester touched many children’s lives with her generosity and sense of humor, for her many years of service to the district the road to the Ottaquechee School was named “Dody Lane” in her honor. She was also a recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award.

She was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the Hartford Teachers Association and the Sweet Adeline’s in the Upper Valley.

Dody had a special affection for her pets particularly her dogs, most recently her English Sheep Dog, Ema. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting and gardening and especially enjoyed the summers spent at the family cottage in Harpswell, ME.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1974 as well as her two sisters Henrietta Hubbard and Virginia Emery.

She is survived by her daughter Betsy Anderson of Sharon, a granddaughter Kim Holloway and her husband Brad of Kalispell, MT, two great granddaughters Hayden and Lucy and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at the funeral home.
