Calvin Charles Hemingway was born September 1, 1908 to Elmer (Dick) & Wilhelmina (Minnie) Sims Hemingway. His siblings were: Ellsworth (1894-1969), Porter (1896-1970), Catherine Leth (1907-1997) & Marion Kirkland (1912)

He married Ina Sanders (born September 1, 1907) on September 1, 1929.

Children born to this union were Muriel (1930) & Marilyn (1932)

Calvin died March of 1935 in an explosion in Chicago.

Ina Hemingway remarried (Albert Erath). Her daughter Muriel noted the September 1st date for both her parent's birthdays and their wedding date. She said that 2 weeks before her Mom died she remarked "Wouldn't it be strange if I died the same month Willie died?" (Willie was her name for her husband.) And yes, she did die in March.

Calvin is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Kasson in a row with other Hemingways who died at a young age. (Bessie (1897-1898), Anna (1868-1882) & Kenneth (1899-1926)

Calvin Hemingway's Death (March 1935)
24 Oct 2009 , Phone conversation with Marilyn Drewes

On October 24, 2009 I had a phone conversation with Calvin Hemingway's daughter Marilyn Hemingway Drewes regarding the death of her Dad. Marilyn was only 3 years old when he died but the following is what she remembered hearing about the tragic death....

Times were tough around 1935 & jobs were hard to come by so Calvin "Bill" Hemingway left with a friend to go to Chicago (Melrose Park) to obtain work at a factory there. Part of Bill's job involved starting the furnace at the factory. Only a few days into working there the furnace blew up on him. The explosion burnt him very badly. (The mortician had to reconstruct his nose which apparently was gone along with an ear.)

The person working with Bill threw blankets over him & he was taken to a hospital but lived only 3 hours. In the meantime Grandpa Dick & Bill's brother (Rufus) along with Bill's wife Ina headed for Chicago from Minnesota. (Bill had expressed a desire to see his daughters but it was decided that the girls should not be taken to Chicago.) They did not reach the hospital before Bill died. Ina Hemingway accompanied her husband's body on the train back to Minnesota.

How hard it must have been for Ina Hemingway having 2 little girls (age 3 & 5) to raise as a single mom! She did get a good job (for that time) working at the telephone company. Ina's sister came to live with them & helped take care of the girls.
