She was born at home in Sardis, WV on August 7, 1927 to Mabel Irene Griffin and Arlen Dewey Cunningham, but was reared by Cecil and Lavenia Cunningham (grandparents) in Brown, WV due to the death of her mother at birth.
After becoming World War II bride in 1946 at the age of 18, she proceeded to become the mother of 5 children within 11 years. Luella helped her husband, Wilbur, obtain a Master’s degree in Agricultural Sciences at West Virginia State University, then become a college student herself in 1960. Luella graduated from Glenville State College in 1964 with a degree in Secondary Education and a specialization in Library Science. In January 1965 the family headed to Tanzania where her husband, Wilbur, helped to establish the University of Morogoro, and Luella served as an elementary school teacher for children of the expatriate University teachers. Following her return to the US in 1967, Luella Dye became Head Librarian at Logan Senior High School, in Logan, WV. During the summers of 1970-1971, Luella attended the University of Kentucky where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Library Administration. Luella was hired in 1972 to supervise the building of the Craft Memorial Library in Bluefield, WV and to serve as it’s Director until her retirement in 1987. A lasting legacy to her vision, was the housing of Coalfield memorabilia collected at the 1983 Pocahontas Coalfield Centennial Celebration. This archive has since greatly increased in size, becoming an important historical resource.
During her Library Administration career, Luella served as President of the WV Library Association in 1978 and President of the Quota Club (1980-81), belonged to the Rotary Club, the Logan and Mercer County Little Theater, and to the First Baptist Church of Bluefield WV. Following her retirement in 1987, Luella and Wilbur became snowbirds who started visiting Lake Placid, FL in the 1988-89 season. They traveled widely with in their Airstream trailer across the US and Canada, participating in many Airstream rallies and making three trips to Alaska. In addition to traveling and photography, Luella Dye used her free time to produce many handcrafted items (quilts, knitted sweaters, clothing), and loved spending time with both her family and friends. When traveling slowed down, Luella and Wilbur became active members of the First Baptist Church of Lake Placid, FL, where Luella loved singing in the church choir.
Mrs. Dye is preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Wilbur Dewayne Dye.
She is survived by her loving children, Lynn L. Wright (Paul), Mary Beth Humes, Eric D. Dye, Thomas E. Dye (Kay) and Dennis Dye (Gina); 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and a sister, Mildred Chapman.
