From 1856-1859 there was a three story brick school on north pine street northwest of the square, just opposite Lincoln Street. The money raise by public subscription. The brick work was done by Edward Forbes and the bricks were made by John Barr, who lived south of town on the Lowell road. His daughter Hester taught in the school and went on to a long career of teaching in Chicago and died there in 1937 at the age of 91
