The crash happened when two vehicles collided around 4:50 p.m. on Markham Road and Sandy Lane, said FHP spokeswoman Lt. Kim Montes. According to FHP troopers, a 2015 Acura sedan driven by Sabrina Patel traveling westbound on Markham Road traveled across a yellow double line and into the eastbound lane, where the vehicle hit the front of 2014 Toyota Corolla head-on. Chargers are pending against the 24-year old Sanford resident, troopers said.
Killed in the incident were sisters Aziya Gandy and Zmiya Gandy, both 9 years old from Sanford. Alexandri Picerine, 14, and Zekiel Picerine, 9, were transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children with serious injuries, troopers said.
The driver of the vehicle with the four children inside was Deidre Gaetano, 52 of Sanford. She was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with serious injuries.
