Elizabeth 'Libbie' Brower Billings was born on 16 Apr 1849 in the town of New Bremen, New York. She was the daughter of William Henry and Julia Nellis Brower, natives of the Palatine region of New York, near Albany.

In 1850, Elizabeth was living with her parents and her brother Madison in New Bremen, New York. Elizabeth was shown as the one year old daughter of William H. Brower, a 25 year old farmer from Germany, his wife, Julia Brower, age 22, from Germany, and Madison Brower, age 3. Living nearby were Elizabeth's grandparents, Bornt and Nancy Nellis, and her uncle Levi Nellis.

In 1855, the Brower family migrated to Brothertown, Wisconsin on Lake Winnebago, west of Lake Michigan. In 1865, Elizabeth's father and brother Madison joined the war effort, enlisting with the Wisconsin Volunteers, Infantries 11 and 6. On 23 May 1865, her brother Madison succumbed to typhoid fever while on duty in Washington DC. During the same period, her father William was hospitalized in Memphis, TN for exposure and other diseases he contracted as a recruit which left him an invalid for the rest of his life. Elizabeth was mentioned in her brother's final letter home dated 13 May 1865, "Tell Lib I will write as soon as I have time."

By 1870, the Brower family had migrated south to Walworth, Wisconsin, located near the head of Geneva Lake. Elizabeth, age 18, was living at home with her parents, William H. Brower, a 48 year old farmer; his wife, Julia, age 45; Ella, age 10; Fred, age 6; and May, age 2.

About 1871, the Brower family moved to Cambridge, Iowa where their Nellis relatives were residing. On 1 Jan 1872, Elizabeth married Norton Herbert Billings at Nevada, Iowa. She was shown as Libbie Brown, age 22.

In Feb 1872, Norton and Elizabeth Billings left Iowa and moved to Marshall, Minnesota. Elizabeth gave birth to two children, both born at Marshall: Etta May Billings (25 Dec 1872-28 May 1954) and Norman Arthur Billings (5 Nov 1874-3 Feb 1964).

Elizabeth died on 7 Mar 1877 at Marshall, Minnesota, aged 27 years. The cause of death was consumption.

Obituary.
Mrs. N. Billings, who has been suffering from ill health for some months, died here last Wednesday morning. She leaves a husband and two children. Marshall Messenger, Marshall, Minnesota, Friday, March 9, 1877, p. 1

Notes:
There's conflicting evidence for Elizabeth's birth date. Her death record lists age at death—27 yrs, 11 mos, and 26 days—making her birth 9 Mar 1849. However, her mother stated on a pension claim that Elizabeth was born on 16 Apr 1850 — likely a year later to meet the requirements of “survivors under the age of 16.” The date engraved on the monument to Elizabeth’s memory in the Cambridge Cemetery where her parents are buried—16 Apr 1851—provides additional proof for April 16. So, honoring her mother’s memory for day and month and keeping in mind that Elizabeth was listed as age 1 in the 1850 census records, I have determined that Elizabeth Brower’s birth date was 16 Apr 1849.

Elizabeth is also memorialized on a monument with her brothers and sisters in the Cambridge Cemetery, where her parents are buried.
