Son of James M. and Elizabeth Barnes Appling.
James Wilson Appling was born on October 7, 1841, in Wright County, Missouri, to James Madison and Elizabeth (Barnes) Appling. He grew up with five brothers and two sisters in Lebanon in Laclede County, Missouri. James Wilson Appling served in the Civil War from 1861-1864. On November 28, 1864, he married Fannie Amelia Smith in Laclede County. They had four children, plus an adopted son. James was the miller at the Lebanon flour mill for many years. He died on July 20, 1920, in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 78. He is buried in the Appling family plot in the Lebanon City Cemetery.

*James Madison Appling, father of James Wilson Appling, donated 10 acres to help make Lebanon the county seat. (His gravestone mentions this.) Benjamin Berry Harrison donated the other 30 acres m/l. James Wilson Appling's uncle was Samuel Wilson Barnes, an early judge elected in Laclede County. James Wilson carries the middle name of Wilson in honor of his Uncle, Samuel Wilson Barnes, an early Laclede County Judge.
