Louis John Cunningham passed away in the early morning of Oct. 21 after taking full advantage of the nearly 85 years he was given on this earth. He joins his bride of 54 years in heaven, who preceded him in death four years ago.

His life was defined by the love and devotion he had for his family, and every decision in his life centered on their well-being. The greatest titles you can give a man belonged to him: Dad and Grandpa, and he was extremely grateful for the love and closeness of his entire family.

Louis was born an only child on Nov. 12, 1933 in Vallejo. A graduate of St. Vincent High School, he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1954 and was stationed in Alameda. After an honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, he worked briefly as a lineman for Pacific Bell before joining the Vallejo Fire Department in 1959. He met the love of his life, Vivian, in Oakland. They married in 1960 and settled in Vallejo. After 32 years as a fireman, he retired as an Assistant Fire Chief in 1991. They raised two sons, Shawn of Vacaville and Paul of Benicia. He also was the proud grandfather to Kelly, Ashley, Scott and Erin, the beloved Uncle Louis to three nephews, and Nancy and Diane were each fortunate to call him their father-in-law for over 25 years.

Family and friends are invited to Twin Chapels Mortuary on Thursday, Oct. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m., for a viewing, as well as a Rosary service on Thursday at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will follow on Friday, Oct. 26 at St. Vincent Church at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest at All Souls Cemetery in Vallejo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a .

Louis lived a life of great faith, with an endless supply of love for his family and kindness for everyone he came in contact with. He will be greatly missed.
