John H. Wicks was born in 1779 in Saratoga County, NY. He married Abigail M. Hartwell in 1811, and lived in Moreau, NY until 1818 when the family moved to Ellery, Chautauqua County, NY. He and Abigail had 8 sons and 5 daughters. He was a millwright. About 1846, John and part of his family moved to Sheffield, Bureau Co., Illinois. He died in Princeton, IL, on October 1, 1850, and was buried at the Oakland Cemetery in that town.
