Hazel was born February 19, 1931, in Jarratt, Va., to the late John Feild Batte, Sr. and Hazel Redman Batte. Hazel had a generous and loving heart to a fault, usually putting others before herself. She would remember special occasions of family and friends with beautifully handwritten cards. She was loved by everyone she met because she genuinely was interested in you and had a talent for putting you at ease and brightening your day. She always remembered your name. Hazel studied Fine Arts at William & Mary, but left early to marry her Marine Corps husband, who was being sent to California. Her travels were just beginning. As former First Lady of both Richmond Professional Institute and Marshall University, Hazel was that special woman behind her successful husband. She was very proud of serving as President of Duke University's Welcoming Committee. Her creative talents were also apparent in her beautifully decorated family home. Hazel will be remembered as a precious wife, mother, and friend, a true angel on earth to anyone fortunate enough to have known her.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Carol Nelson; as well as a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Konieczny. She was also preceded in death by a brother, John Feild Batte, Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Roland Hill Nelson, Jr.; daughters, Rolanda Leigh Nelson Shuck (husband, Douglas) and Deborah Nelson Reeves (husband, Robert); brother, William Granville Batte; and granddaughter, Angela Christine Reeves.
Her brother, John Feild (correct spelling) Batte, Jr . is buried in Westhampton Memorial Park, Richmond, Va.
