She was married to Clayton first, he was killed in action in the Battle of Munoz, Luzon in WWII, and afterward she married his brother Calvin.

Regarding Valerie's maiden name: Many thanks to fellow member James Pratt for Valerie's marriage license from her first marriage (to Clayton) which lists her maiden name as Brozyna. However, her marriage certificate from her second marriage (to Calvin) gives her parents' surname as Brooks. It's suggested that Brooks might be an Anglicized version of the original name Brozyna. (Note that her obituary names two brothers who survived her, both still with the name Brozyna. So it may have only been the parents who changed their name). (Or Sigmund Brooks may have been a step-father, but Valerie chose to list him as her father on her second marriage certificate). More research needed.
