CARL RANDOLPH BUCKNER

It is with great sadness that the family of Reverend Carl Randolph Buckner, age 94, announces his peaceful passing at his home in Fairmont, West Virginia, on Friday, October 26, 2018, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant struggle with dementia. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Carl was born in the coal camp of Ward, in Kanawha County, West Virginia, on April 15, 1924. He was the second of eight children of Robert Randolph and Myrtle "Mirtie" Olive Hedrick Buckner. He wrote about growing up in Ward, his large and loving family, and the joys and profound tragedies they experienced in his book "A Time to Every Purpose – Memoirs of a West Virginia Coal Camp" which is a legacy to his family.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Force from 1943 until 1946. He received his basic training at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, and served in Glasgow, Scotland; Reading, England, where he was assigned to a squadron of C-47 planes designed to pull gliders and transport paratroopers behind enemy lines, and in Germany, where he guarded German prisoners of war.
While in the service, he corresponded with a young girl from Ward, Betty Wheeler. The letters were short, friendly, and regular and he was always happy to receive her letters but he thought of her as the little girl back home. One day he was quite shocked when he opened a letter to see a picture of Betty at age seventeen and saw that the little girl had grown into a beautiful young woman. He was very anxiously awaiting his time to be discharged and return to the United States to get acquainted with Betty. In 1946 he returned from Germany, courted, and married her. They have celebrated 72 years of marriage and were blessed with five children.
At an early life Carl dedicated his life to God. He loved telling the story of how he was saved at age twelve. He received a calling to the ministry at the age of 26 in 1950 and served as a minister at many churches for the Church of God of Prophecy until age 91.
He last pastored at the Church of God of Prophecy in Morgantown, West Virginia. His love of God and for his church was felt by all who heard his sermons, music, and prayers. He was an avid musician who played the guitar and fiddle and sang.
Carl was also a coal miner most of his adult life, working as an electrician in the mines. In 1975, he retired from the coal mines and became a federal mine inspector for the U.S. Department of the Interior. He retired from the federal government in 1986.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his four brothers, Shelby Lee, Billie, and John Edward, and Harless Leroy Buckner, two brothers-in-law, Howard "Pete" Martin and Wilmer Waugh, his sister-in-law, Ellen Persinger Buckner and his nephew Rick Buckner. He was also preceded in death by the beloved daughter of Betty and Carl, Deanna Lynn Buckner.
Carl is survived by three loving sisters, Irene Buckner Waugh, of Kessler's Cross Lanes, West Virginia, Christine Buckner Baker and her husband Charlie of Elyria, Ohio, and Roberta Buckner Boggs and her husband Dalton of Hugheston, West Virginia; many loving nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He will be lovingly remembered by his surviving wife of 72 years, Betty Wheeler Buckner, his three sons, Robert Edward Buckner and his wife Michell of Fairmont; Carl Randolph Buckner II and his wife B.J. of Fairmont; Michael Wayne Buckner and his wife, Shari, of Fairfax, Virginia; and his daughter Judy Buckner Larry and her husband Joseph of Philippi, West Virginia. He especially treasured and will be lovingly remembered by his six grandsons, Trae (Jamie), Bobby (Tammy), and David Buckner (Eliza), Craig Brown, and Christopher (Denita) and Joshua (Brittany) Lively, and two granddaughters Ryan Lynn Buckner (Jeff) and Christina Buckner Drainer (Luke). He will be also fondly remembered by his seven great-grandchildren, Braiden Buckner, Claire Drainer, Annibelle Lively, Jason Beck, and Gracie, Nya, and Jasmine Buckner.
Friends and family will be received on October 30, 2018, from 11:00 am to noon at Restlawn Memory Gardens, at 135 Restlawn Cemetery Road, in Victor, West Virginia. Services and internment will follow immediately at Restlawn Memory Gardens with Reverend Bill Coon, nephew of Carl, and Reverend Kay Lake officiating. Full Military Funeral Honors will be accorded.
