BIOGRAPHY

James was born in Odessa and his birth name was James Gilbert Barnhill. His mother Betty Joe Montgomery married Louie J. Dalton. James' last name was changed to Dalton. James attended Odessa schools living with his aunts and grandparents while his father was working all over the U.S. and overseas. He dropped out of school at Sawyer High School in Sawyer, Oklahoma while living with his step father's parents. He enlisted in the Army and was inducted on July 25, 1967 when he was 17 years old in Eugene, Oregon. He used his father's parents address in Sawyer, Oklahoma as his home of record.

He completed basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and then was assigned to Fort Ord, California for AIT as a wireman. When he arrived at Fort Ord, California, he became ill and was a patient and medical holdover at the Medical Holding Company at Fort Ord until February 14, 1968. He then completed wireman training at Fort Ord and was assigned to the 68th Transportation Company in Germany as a truck driver (OJT) beginning June 15, 1968.

He was levied for Vietnam from Germany and began his tour as a truck driver/dispatcher with B Company, USAD, 1st Log Command. He was injured in a swimming accident and suffered a high spinal cord injury. He was medevaced to the 249th General Hospital at Camp Drake, Japan where he died on January 12, 1970. He was two weeks short of his 20th birthday.

He was buried with full military honors in the Sunset Memorial Garden's Cemetery in Odessa. His parents are now buried next to him.

His name is on the Wall at Panel 14W Line 028.
