J. ALICE MCCOLLOM
September 27, 1922 - October 30, 2018
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Alice (Hutchinson) McCollom was born Sept 27, 1922 to Robert Miles Hutchinson and Mary Loretta (Hannan) Hutchinson. Alice was their second child, born in their home and grew up on the farm land that her father and grandfather homesteaded in the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889. She rode her horse “Jelly” to Cleveland School, a one room school house close to what is now Portland and NW 150th in Oklahoma City. While still in her teens, Alice rented a room from an Edmond family, living there during the week so she could attend Edmond High School. Alice worked at the Wide-A-Wake café in Edmond to pay her expenses. In high school she was an active member of 4-H Club and Speech Club, winning several awards. During this time she met the love of her life and future husband, Frank McCollom from Britton High School. Soon after their marriage World War II began; Frank trained as a pilot and became a multi-engine flight instructor in the US Army Air Corps. Alice, like most women supported the war effort, worked for a brief time for Macklanburg-Duncan in Oklahoma City. When Frank returned, they began their family. Alice had Sharon, her firstborn, followed by Loretta, her second child. They built a home on 15 acres of the original Homestead near Memorial and Portland.

Alice’s gift to this world was being a devoted mother, consummate homemaker and pie maker extraordinaire. She was an active member of the Spring Creek Home County Extension Group for many years. She loved the kitchen and all that it meant to the family, it was her space. She kept the recipes of all the wonderful pies in her head and would run folks out of the kitchen when she would add the “secret ingredients.” Alice was competitive; she always won blue ribbons at the Oklahoma State and County Fairs for those pies and flower arranging. She always taught her family to be good neighbors and follow the Golden Rule. She loved Oklahoma, its people, and was proud to be from one of the first families that settled in Oklahoma.

She passed on Tuesday, October 30 at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank McCollom, her mother, father and older brother, Frank Hutchinson. She is survived by daughter Sharon Denham, grandson Darren Denham and wife Marla; great-granddaughters Delaney and Emelia Denham; daughter Loretta Caram and husband David. The family wishes to thank the staff of Heaven House.

Funeral services will be held at Demuth Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. There will be open visitation from noon till 6 p.m. on Monday, November 5, 2018 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, 13301 N. Kelley, following Tuesday's service.
