Althea Ames, 94, of Hollis Center and formerly of Lexington, Mass., died Friday at a Biddeford hospital.

She was born in Willimantic, a daughter of William L. and Iva Bennett Earley. She attended Willimantic schools, the former Farmington Normal School and Harvard University.

Mrs. Ames was a school teacher for 23 years, teaching in Westfield and Framingham, Mass. She was a principal at Monroe School in Lexington and retired in 1956.

She had lived here since 1964, coming from Lexington.

Mrs. Ames spent summers at her camp in South Casco on Sebago Lake.

She was a member of Hancock Congregational Church in Lexington.

She was also a member of the Rug Hookers Guild, was an avid reader and enjoyed needlework and gardening.

She was a special friend of Margaret McKenney and Elizabeth Mitchell.

Her husband, William R. Ames, died Jan. 14, 1983.

Surviving are 16 nephews and nieces.

Visiting hours will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday at Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elmwood Cemetery, Guilford.
