A very accomplished lawyer. Along with other people in 1845 he promoted his idea of creating the Augusta, Georgia canal that gave the town water power to run factories and mills. With his law office, banking and other involvements, he became a very wealthy man and just prior to the Civil War was credited with having approximately half a million dollars, which was exceptional in that era.

Married Julia Ann Bryan on 24 February 1824 at Mt. Zion, Hancock County, Georgia.
