LANKFORD, Ida Doris Todd, beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, died on November 11th in Newport News, Virginia. She was predeceased by her husband, George Seth Lankford, and by her daughter-in-law, Judy Baughan Lankford.

She is survived by two sons, Nelson D. Lankford and wife Carter Blackford Lankford and Harvey V. Lankford and wife Clemmie Williams Lankford, all of Richmond; two grandsons, Seth Emerson Lankford of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Reid Wesley Lankford and wife Julie Nakpil Lankford of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Born on July 23, 1923, she was the daughter of Frances Webster Castor Todd and Emerson Todd of Elizabeth City County (now Hampton), Virginia.

She was predeceased by her brothers Andrew W. Todd and Jesse E. Todd and her sisters Thelma Todd Fox and Ruth Todd Milner. For several generations, since well before the Civil War, her family had resided in the Todd's Lane section of Hampton, named for her great grandfather; the family farm stood on land now occupied by the Farmington neighborhood.

She attended local schools and graduated from Hampton High School, class of 1941. Upon graduation, she worked as a typist at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company as the defense buildup before World War II accelerated. There she met her future husband, then a designer in training at the shipyard.

They married on March 24, 1945, shortly after he joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Washington, D.C. Because the groom was uncertain of the exact time he could get leave for the wedding, invitations for the service at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton left off the time of day. Hitchhiking his way from Washington, he just made it to the church on time on the appointed day. Ida liked to tell the story of selling her pet dog to buy flowers for the service.

The young couple began married life in the nation's capital in the spring of victory in Europe. They moved to East Texas in the summer, where her husband joined his ship, the destroyer USS Stickell (DD-888) in Galveston. The couple returned to Hampton after the war where he resumed work as a marine architect/naval engineer designing submarines and aircraft carriers for the shipyard and she became a homemaker and church musician.

Her musical talent was first expressed on the violin, which she played in the Hampton High School orchestra. Later she became an accomplished pianist. This talent, and her devotion to the church she loved, led her to be the faithful, long-serving organist at Liberty Baptist Church, where she and her husband were pillars of the congregation for many years.

Following a private burial at Peninsula Memorial Park, the family will receive visitors between 2 and 3 pm on Friday, November 16th, in the assisted living activity room of the Chesapeake retirement community, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News.
