The designer, together with his father Matthaeus STEIN (1776-1842) and grandfather Johan Andreas STEIN (1728-1792), of the so called "German" or "Vienna mechanics" of piano instruments building. These pianos were played with pleasure from W. A. Mozart. Family Stein developed the very high and regarded level of piano mechanics, the basics of the today's piano technology.
