Edward B. Sanderson, 88, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at I.U. Health Ball Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Ed was surrounded by his family when he passed. Ed was born on January 3, 1930, in Monrovia, Alabama (now known as Huntsville), to Lowry and Iva (Hillard) Sanderson. After Ed graduated from high school in 1948, he was awarded a baseball scholarship by the Huntsville Optimist Club, where he graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) with two degrees, one in Education, and one in Science. Ed was the fifth child of Lowry and Iva. He has one surviving brother, Graydon Sanderson (Juanita), Prospect, Tennessee, and he was preceded in death by two sisters, Shelia Bradley (A.L. Bradley), LaVerne Majors (Jim), and one brother, John David Sanderson (Mary), Pulaski, Tennessee. Ed met and married his first wife, Carol, on a trip to visit his sister, LaVerne in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in June of 1952. Growing up on a cotton farm, and not always completing their morning chores in time to catch the bus, the three boys would ride their pet horse, Trigger, to school. Upon dropping the kids off at school, Trigger would return home on his own. Ed liked to boast that he graduated in the top ten of his class… there were only ten kids in his country school class. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ed was certified in Transportation, taking his first job at Mason & Dixon Lines, and he also worked at another trucking company in Indianapolis while living in Greenwood, Indiana, before moving to Muncie, Indiana in 1971 to join Delaware Trucking Company Inc. and Cox Motor Transport in Albany, Indiana. Ed retired from Delaware Trucking Company in December of 1989 as President of the company. Ed enjoyed playing golf and was a lifetime member of the Muncie Elks Lodge #245. Ed also liked to play Bridge, and often played with seven women. He also belonged to Eastern Central Indiana Investment Club for ten years. After his first wife, Carol, passed away in April of 1985, Ed remained a widower in the family home in Westbrook. In the 1990’s, a little bored, he began driving for Enterprise Rental Cars, and then began transporting Fleetwood RV’s from Decatur, Indiana, to dealers across the country; he drove all fifty states in ten months. Ed also traveled to many Caribbean Islands, and almost all of Canada. On December 9, 2004, Ed married his longtime friend, Barbara J. Syphers. They lived happily in Muncie, Indiana, until the time of his death. Ed was a former member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on White River Boulevard in Muncie. In recent years, he attended Hazelwood Christian Church in Muncie, Indiana. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, three siblings, and first wife as previously mentioned. Surviving Ed are his second wife, Barbara J. Syphers, four children, David F. Sanderson (Zaheia), Indianapolis, Indiana, Denise L. Jarrett (partner, Mike Kalogeros), Fishers, Indiana, Scott A. Sanderson (Cheryl), Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Angela K. Sanderson (Jaime), Hartford City, Indiana; two step-children, Tamara Syphers-Gibson (Ron), Zebulon, North Carolina, and Joseph E. Syphers (Charlotte), Muncie, Indiana; sixteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Ed also had a caregiver that he was very fond of, Brook Ledbetter. Services will be held at Elm Ridge Funeral Home, 4600 West Kilgore Avenue, Muncie, Indiana, 47304, on Saturday, November 17, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Ron Gibson officiating. Calling will be two hours prior to services from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. All in attendance are invited to a lite meal following the graveside service at Elm Ridge Funeral Home in the Community Room. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Optimist Club of Huntsville, Alabama, P.O. Box 2230 Huntsville, Alabama 35804
