Sister Sainte Illumina was the daughter of Elzéar Gagnon and Marcelline Lebel. One of seventeen children born to this couple. She and nearly all of her siblings were born at Saint-Fabien. She was baptized on 27 Dec 1883 and named Marie Léontine Roseanne Jeanne Gagnon. She was known as Jeanne. Her godparents were Frédéric Gagnon and Henriette Côté. In 1893 at the age of ten Jeanne's father Elzéar died. Two years later the family moved to Fall River, Massachusetts where work was plentiful in the fabric mills. In 1898 her mother married a twice-widowed cousin who was the father of 13 children. Most of the older children lived on their own and Jeanne and another sister, Marie Anne went to live with their older sister, Aurelie and her husband Joseph August Morin in Fall River.

Once Jeanne was grown she and two cousins, Blanche and Josephine Morin, decided to join the Sisters of Charity and spent her life in Quebec City. She was the last of the Gagnon children to die in 1967 at Estimauville (a district of Quebec City).
