Frances Williams Vowell died at her home in Auburn, Alabama on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, the day before her 95th birthday.

She was born May 24, 1912, in Auburn, to Professor Percey Frederick Williams and Fannye Heard Williams McDonald. She attended the Auburn Public Schools and graduated from Auburn University (Alabama Polytechnic Institute) in 1934. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

The daughter of a family of educators, she taught 3rd and 4th grades in public and private schools in Jacksonville,
Anniston and Auburn. She was active in and served as president of the Lee County Humane Society. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Auburn and was in charge of church flowers for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gray Vowell, her brother, John Walter (Jack) Williams and her daughter, Anne Vowell Crain Baker.

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Vowell Tremaine and husband Joel of Auburn, son, Judge John Scott Vowell and wife Cameron of Birmingham; grandchildren, Michael Owen Crain and wife Sarah of Athens, GA; Sara Tremaine Sykes and husband Paul of Birmingham; Katherine Tremaine Poss and husband Trey of Birmingham; John Scott Vowell, Jr. of Hampden-Sydney, Virginia; and 8 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the East Alabama Hospice and to her devoted sitters Geraldine Jenkins and Ann Finley Poythress.

There will be a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church of Auburn on Saturday, May 25 at 10 a.m., Frederick's Funeral Home directing. There will be a private interment at Pine Hill Cemetery in Auburn.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the First Presbyterian Church Flower Fund of Auburn, 143 East Thach Avenue, Auburn, AL 36831, and the Lee County Humane Society, 1140 Ware Drive, Auburn, AL 36832.
