Marion Sims McCutchan III passed away on November 22, 2018 of a heart attack.

Sims was born June 6, 1942 in Marshall, Texas to Marion Sims McCutchan, Jr. and Johnnie Adeline Davis McCutchan. After graduating from Marshall High School he earned a BA in history at the University of Texas at Austin. He taught English and Speech at Pearsall High School in Pearsall, Texas for four years before returning to the University of Texas at Austin to earn a MA in library science.

He worked at the University of Houston Law Library before moving to the Houston Public Library System in 1975 where he worked for the remainder of his career. His service as the Head Librarian of the Heights Branch Library for nine years was recognized by the City of Houston with Sims McCutchan Day on October 14, 1985. He subsequently became Region Manager for Houston Public Library's Park Place and Alief Regions. He retired in 2003.

Sims's loves were many, varied and intense and he loved sharing them with others. Sims found continued great joy in his many dear friends those from childhood and youth, the students he taught and mentored in Pearsall, colleagues from work, neighbors and others he found who shared his interests and concerns. He loved his dogs, good food, good conversation, good books, travel, theater, fire trucks and trains. Beginning with the town of his birth he became fascinated with cities, their histories, buildings and how they worked with public transit of particular interest.

He is survived by his partner of 35 years, Margaret Culbertson of Houston, Texas; cousins, Mrs. Terry Butler Bailey also of Houston and Clarence Ray Davis of Richmond, Texas; and sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty A. McCutchan of Texarkana, Texas.

Donations may be made in his memory to the library, history museum, theater company or progressive organization or candidate of your choice.

A remembrance celebration to honor Sims will be held at a future date.
