Stephen Higginson was one of the most influential merchants of Salem, Mass. He held the principal offices in the town, was the justice of the Court of Common Pleas and representative. He was actively interested in establishment of the Social Liberty, which in 1810 was purchased by the proprietors of the Salem Athenaeum. Married April 22, 1743, Elizabeth Cabot, daughter of John and Anne (Orne) Cabot, born June 12, 1715 at Salem; buried April 26, 1797, aged 81 years, 10 months at Beverly, Mass.
