John was the son of Missouri Ann (Dill) Akin and Porter D. Akin. The town of Akinsville, Morgan County, Missouri, was named after John's grandfather, Rev. Shannon Akin.

John was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was raised by his stepmother, Katherine (Baughman) Akin, however, she passed away when he was around 13 years old. The remainder of his childhood was with his father, 2nd stepmother, 1 sister, and 11 stepbrothers and sisters.

On March 9, 1898, John married Minnie E. Newkirk in Morgan County, Missouri. Their children were
Clyde Akin, (b. 1901, Morgan Co., MO)
Beulah Akin (b. 22 AUG 1903, Pony, MT).

John had moved from Missouri to Montana where he lived for about 5 more years. He was employed by Isdell Mercantile Company as a driver for 2 years. Later, he moved his family to the Summit Valley, Montana area where he purchased a ranch. John died near Butte, Montana. He was only about 31 when he passed away.
