Ida Mae was the daughter of Jesse Johnson and Sophia Wilson, both from Ontario, Canada. In the 1870 United States census, taken in June, Ida was six years old, living with her parents and three younger siblings in Columbus Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. Her mother died in childbirth when Ida was eight years old and her father soon remarried. He was a farmer in Columbus Township before moving to Wisconsin where he died.

Ida was working as a domestic servant in the Cadillac Hotel in the city of St. Clair, Michigan, when she married Peter Williams 9 June 1898 by the priest at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She and Peter had seven children, six of whom lived to adulthood: Frank, John, Clara (Gregg), Mary Elizabeth (Hyslop), George and Gertrude(Hyslop). Ida Mae and her husband Peter were farmers living in St. Clair Township.

"Mrs. Peter Williams, 63, residing west of here on the Gratiot Highway, died at 2 p.m. Saturday. Five children survive: Mrs. Merl Hyslop, Mrs. Louis Hyslop, Mrs. Robert Gregg, John, Frank & George. Services conducted by Rev. Father Edward J. Kronemaker, St. Mary's Catholic Church." (Port Huron Times Herald, Dec. 17, 1928)

Note: Ida's biographical information before her marriage can be difficult to sift through; her age and birthplace were never given consistently. Even her father's name on her marriage license was incorrect. It was only through DNA testing that closely matched Ida's descendant with those of her sister Martha that her origins have been discovered. - Suzanne
