Esther B. Campbell Gates was born February 11, 1922 in Peru, IL. She attended Northern Illinois University on a full scholarship from 1940-1942 leaving to enter the war effort with the U.S. Army Air Corps. She continued her education at American and George Washington Universities in Washington, DC. She was the first woman admitted to the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, graduating in 1963.

During all her career pursuits, her greatest achievement was being the mother to her children, whom she raised as a single parent. Her son Keith A. Campbell, a Combat Medic was KIA Feb 8, 1967 and posthumously a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. Nov 14, 2006, the JBSA/Ft. Sam Houston library was memorialized in his name, KEITH A CAMPBELL MEMORIAL LIBRARY. Another son, a USAF Reservist, was tragically killed 2 1/2 years following Sp/4 Keith A. Campbell’s death. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Judy Campbell Campbell (Richard) and Grand Children Keith (Liz), Kimberlee and 7 great-grandchildren.

Esther married BG Mahlon “Ink” Gates (West Point Class of 1942) in 1972. Esther retired from the United States Poastal Service Senior Executive Service to accompany her husband in his second career as Manager of the Department of Energy’s Operations Office in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Esther was a world renown poet, some of her latest works were published following her death and continues to bring joy to many.
