Obituary for Katherine Joan "Tinka" Worthington
On December 4, 2018, the world lost a true angel: our mom, Katherine Joan “Tinka” Worthington. Tinka, her affectionate German nickname, was born on July 23rd, 1926, at Toledo Hospital, to her beloved parents Loretta Cook Heinlein, housewife and accomplished artist, and Harry Julius Vortriede, a printer by trade. Her only brother, Dr. Charles Henry Vortriede, a general surgeon, who preceded her in both birth and death, was born on August 3rd, 1916 also at Toledo Hospital. He was a true light in her life, as was his entire Detroit, MI based extended family.
Tinka attended Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, located adjacent to Miami University, where she eventually met her future husband, Randall “Randy” Wade Worthington, Sr. Getting married after Randy’s short stint in the Navy and his college graduation, they spent 58 happy and wonderful years together raising 5 children and running their own successful furniture operations and businesses. After Randy retired, they purchased a motorhome and traveled throughout the U.S. — Tinka saying that was one of the happiest times of her life. But Mom’s greatest joy was her family. She loved gathering us all together just visiting or playing cards. And she always fed us. Boy did she feed us! Mom was an absolutely fabulous cook, and her English muffin bread was the best, to which all family and many friends can attest!
Tinka inherited a deep artistic talent from her mother, including oil, watercolor, and pastel painting. She carried her artistic bent later to include the fine art of dyed-dough flowers of precise scale and detail. She also spent an entire decade pursuing cut stained-glass art. And, toward the final decades of her life, she dedicated her talents towards weaving arts: carding, spinning, and weaving.
Tinka is preceded in death by Randy but is survived by her children: Randall Wade Worthington, Jr. and his wife, Mary Jo (Munroe Falls, OH); Laurie Miller and her beloved deceased husband Robert Lincoln Miller (Kansas City, MO); Charles Worthington and his wife, Jean (Mansfield, OH); William Worthington and his wife, Chris (Bluffton, OH), Kate Simmons and her husband, Scott (San Francisco, CA) as well as 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. We were so blessed to have this woman for 92 years whether as our mom, our grandmother, great grandmother (“GG”), our friend or our confidant. She will be missed beyond words.
A member of First Christian Church in Stow, Mom’s memorial service will be planned and held later, as the weather improves. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, PLEASE MAKE DONATIONS TO MOM'S FAVORITE CHARITY -THE SALVATION ARMY.
