Tom grew up in New Vernon, NJ, and attended Morristown High School. After graduating from Trinity College in 1955, where he was a member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity and the ROTC, Tom joined the United States Navy, where he served as a Lieutenant J.G. navigator on the USS Kearsarge aircraft carrier in the Pacific after the Korean War.

In addition to raising his four children in their family homestead on Blue Mill Road in New Vernon, Tom had a long business career in the financial services industry. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Chester, NJ, then to Long Valley, NJ to live with their daughter in 2009. In addition to being a loving husband and father, he was also very active in the community. Tom and his wife have been lifelong members of the New Vernon Presbyterian Church, where eight generations of his family have attended. As an active member of the Harding Township Historical Society, he worked to restore the Tunis-Ellicks House. Tom was also an avid gardener and golfer and in his retirement he greatly enjoyed working at the Flanders Valley Golf Course.
