Obituary for Ruby Waggoner

Ruby Linda Oliver Waggoner was born December 4, 1919, in Duck Hill, Mississippi, to Ruby and Bettie Stoker Oliver. She passed from this life on Tuesday, December 15, 2015. She graduated as salutatorian of her class at Binford High School in 1936 in Duck Hill. She came to Belen following high school graduation to live with her sister, Pearl Abel. She worked as a cashier in the news stand of the Harvey House when the trains stopped to feed their passengers (before the years of the dining car.) Here she met and married James Wilton Waggoner on September 16, 1937 at the Federated Church in Belen. To this union were born two children, Linda and James. Ruby was employed with New Mexico Power Company from 1937-1942, then with First National Bank of Belen beginning July 5, 1950 until her retirement May 15, 1988. During her banking career she supervised the Bookkeeping Department. She was promoted to Assistant Cashier in 1961 and later to Assistant Vice President, a position she held until retirement in May 1988. Ruby was a member of the National Association of Bank Women, serving as the New Mexico Group Chairman 1964-65, a National Director 1968-1969, a member of Public Relations, New Mexico Bankers Association 1966-68. She was also a member of the Valencia County Historical Society and the Order of Eastern Star (Worthy Matron 1953). She was Mother Advisor for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls in 1956, and DeMolay Mother’s Club President. She is a past member of the Belen Pilot Club and served as President in 1974. She has been an active member of the Methodist Church since its reorganization in October 1948. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served as Church Historian and Church Treasurer, was a member of numerous committees, and served 4 years as president of United Methodist Women. Ruby and Wilton traveled extensively from 1977 to 1985. They enjoyed trips to Japan, China, the Holy Land, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, England, France, Germany, Switzerland and Holland, as well as trips throughout the United States. In February 2001, she was able to visit the Big Island of Hawaii with James (son), Sue and Bill. They always said that traveling was great but that our Land of Enchantment was the best place to live. After retirement, Wilton and Ruby stayed close to home, continuing to give much of their time to helping at their church. Ruby loved to cook, bake, knit, crochet, and paint pictures. Her untold hours spent preparing meals and banquets, baking cookies, cakes and pies, making her legendary awesome homemade candy and probably hundreds of pots of chile, are a true testament of her love for her family and her church. She never said no to any request and would drop everything to help someone in need. Countless friends and family have been the grateful recipients of her knitting and crocheting talents, including her beautiful one-of-a-kind afghans and baby blankets. She had a true gift for the art of candy making and one could always find a bowl of divinity on her counter. Ruby is survived by her daughter, Linda and husband, Ron Oldfield of Los Lunas; son James and wife, Sue of Laramie, WY; four grandchildren, Bob Atwood (Penni) of Belen, Becky Atwood of Ruidoso, Bill Waggoner (Karri) and John Waggoner (Sherry) of Laramie, WY; three great grandchildren, Mackenzie Waggoner, Brandon Waggoner, and Jacob Waggoner all of Laramie, WY and a very large extended family.
