Charlestown Police Department, Indiana Sgt. Benton Bertram was killed in a vehicle crash while involved in a vehicle pursuit on State Road 3 at 10:30 pm. He was 33 years old.

He had attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation but the driver refused to stop. As the pursuit neared State Road 56, in Scott County, Sergeant Bertram's vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Other officers in the pursuit immediately stopped and rendered aid but Sergeant Bertram succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver continued to flee but was apprehended in Clark County. He was charged with resisting law enforcement resulting in death and auto theft.

Sergeant Bertram's canine partner survived the crash and was treated at a local veterinary hospital.

Ben held the rank of Sergeant as a K-9 Handler member of the Charlestown Police Department in Charlestown, Indiana, a member of the Marvin Watts Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 181, North American Police Work Dog Association and a member of 11-191 graduating class of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, Indiana.

Sergeant Bertram had served with the Charlestown Police Department for nine years. He is survived by his parents.

Visitation will be held at the Charlestown High School on Monday, December 17th from 2 P.M. to 7 P.M. and Tuesday, December 18th from 9 to 11 A.M.

Life Celebration services will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 11 A. M. at the Charlestown High School Gymnasium.
