Victor H. “Vic” Bradshaw, 57, of Harrisonburg died Monday, December 10, 2018 after suffering a heart attack.
Vic was born January 11, 1961 at Mary Washington Hospital. He graduated from Spotsylvania Senior High School in 1979 and Mary Washington College in 1984. Vic grew up in the Todd’s Tavern area of Spotsylvania County in an era when he could ride his bike to his friends’ house and a good time was a pickup ballgame in his grandparents’ field. He enjoyed sports, live music, animals, the newspaper business and most of all people – all people; and people, especially children, loved him.
Vic’s career as a journalist began at The Free Lance-Star as a sports department stringer while he was still in high school, then as a newsroom intern when he was a student at MWC. He had a wicked sense of humor which surfaced when, as a young intern, he slipped a professional wrestler’s name into the hospital notes column in the paper in the early 1980s. “Ric Flair was released from Mary Washington Hospital after being treated for contusions,” Vic wrote. His straight-laced bosses gave him a spanking for that, but it was well worth it to Vic, who chuckled at the memory for decades.
Vic’s first full time job as a newspaperman was at the Martinsville Bulletin, and he wrote for papers throughout Virginia and South Carolina over the years. His last job was as a business reporter at the Harrisonburg Daily News Record. With his likable nature, work ethic and intelligence he could have made lots of money in other fields. His concern for people and desire to help them, to, as Finley Peter Dunne wrote about the purpose of newspapers, “to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable,” combined with a lack of concern for himself, fueled his dedication to journalism.
Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth “Beth” Bradshaw; sister Andrea Bradshaw; aunts Sue Acors and Kathy Wilkerson; numerous cousins; and countless friends and their children, who affectionately referred to him as “Uncle Vic.” He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin H. Bradshaw; paternal grandparents Harry and Rea Bradshaw; and maternal grandparents Henry and Mattie Wilkerson.
He will be remembered for his love of people, enduring loyalty and the quiet kindness he showed to all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 16 at Wilderness Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
