Supported educational and health causes in Cleveland and elsewhere. She founded the Commonwealth Fund in NYC on October 17, 1918. In Cleveland, she endowed a chair in Biblical literature at (Case) Western Reserve University, presented a $50,000 gift to Lake side Hospital, and with her son-in-law Louis Severance funded WRU's Harkness Chapel, dedicated in 1902 to her late daughter Florence.
In 1917 she gave a gift of $3.5 million to Yale University. She and her son Edward also gave 20 acres of land to Columbia University for their medical center.
She was the Second wife of Stephen Harkness m 1854. Two daughters, Jennie and Florence, and two sons, Charles W. and Edward S.
