Horatio was a farmer. He enlisted at Ashland, Virginia as a Private in Company "G", 4th Virginia Cavalry Regiment on 12 March 1862. He was later captured, and held at Fortress Monroe and Point Lookout, before being exchanged on 13 February 1865. (Note that the headstone application filed after his death states he served in the 22nd Virginia Infantry Regiment.)
