Thomas Joseph Barry, 87, of Cary passed away Friday at Western Wake Hospital after a courageous battle.

Mr. Barry was a long term resident of Durham. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He was born January 5, 1918, the son of the late Patrick and Margaret Barry, also of Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Barry was a graduate of St. Michaels High School in New York, and St. Johns University of New York. He served in the United States Army in World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy, and was awarded a Purple Heart. He worked for Liggett & Myers in Durham for over 30 years. He was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church of Durham.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Barry of Cary; son, Thomas J Barry and wife CarolAnn of Charlotte; daughter, Margaret Mary McGillivray and husband Stuart of Tampa, Florida; son, Robert J Barry and wife Elaine Buxton Barry of Cary; grandchildren, Matthew Christopher Barry, Megan Elizabeth Barry, Kathleen Allison Barry, Sarah Nicole Barry, Alan Thomas McGillivray, Erin Hart Barry, Laura Rosalyn Barry, and Ethan Buxton Barry.
