Son of Cornelius and Eliza Scurlock of Cross Creek, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Husband of Nannie Saunders Scurlock, also of Cross Creek, North Carolina. Father of Dr. Herbert Clay Scurlock, Addison Norton Scurlock (famed Washington, DC photographer), and Mattie G. Scurlock.

Attorney and, from 1874 through the 1890s, a North Carolina Republican Party leader, even nominated as a Republican candidate for Congress in 1890. In 1883, he was appointed a clerk in the Pension Office in Washington, DC. After leaving this post, he was appointed by President Harrison as Postmaster of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Gravesite Details

Originally buried in the old Columbian Harmony Cemetery in Washington, DC, but believed to have been re-interred, with about 37,000 others, in the National Harmony Memorial Park in Prince George's County, Maryland, in 1960.
