Deacon John A. Mowery, Jr., 80, of Colonial Park Care Center, Lower Paxton Twp. and formerly of the Presbyterian Apartments, Harrisburg, died Thursday, December 20, 2018 in the Center.

He was in the first class of Deacons ordained for the Diocese of Harrisburg on June 3, 1978. He was engaged in Counseling and Spiritual Direction. He had served as Chairman of the Deacons Council and Chair for Spiritual Development. He was Youth Director for the Diocese and Director of Camp New Dawn. He was assigned to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Parish, Harrisburg, and was well known for his work with youth and as a Retreat Director. He served on the Advisory Board for the Dauphin County Area Agency on Aging, Charter President of Capitol Area Sertoma Club, member of the Holy Rosary Council 869 Knights of Columbus, and Bishop J.W. Shanahan Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

He was very active with Boy Scouts of America and served 25 years as a Troop Scoutmaster. He was active with the Keystone Area Council, Hidden Valley Scout Reservation as Program Director, Aquatics Director, Camp Director, Wood Badge Staff, and most recently Camp Commissioner. He had been Director for the National Camp School for the Northeast Region. He was a Vigil Honor Member of the Order of the Arrow. He received the St. George Award from the Diocese for his work with Scouting. He was awarded the Distinguished Commissioner Award from the Boy Scouts of America and its Silver Beaver Award.

He was the son of the late John A. Mowery, Sr. and Dorothy T. Shindler Mowery and is survived by one brother, Joseph Mowery and his wife, Antonia of Harrisburg; and nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 10:00 am in Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, 2121 N. Third St., Harrisburg with the Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer, DD, JCL, Bishop of Harrisburg as the Principal Celebrant. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Friday from 8:30 am until 9:45 am in his church. Arrangements are being handled by Wiedeman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Steelton.
