In February 1939, Isadore Greenbaum, a Jewish plumber's helper from Brooklyn, risked his life by confronting the virulently anti-Semitic speaker at a rally of the German-American Bund. Infuriated by the rhetoric of "Bundesfuhrer" Fritz Kuhn, Greenbaum rushed the stage in New York City's Madison Square Garden, shouting "Down with Hitler!" in front of 22,000 Nazi sympathizers. To the cheers of the crowd, he was immediately attacked and beaten by Kuhn's uniformed guards. NYC police saved Greenbaum from serious injury or even death, only to drag him away and arrest him for disorderly conduct.
When the United States entered World War II, Greenbaum enlisted in the Navy and fought the Nazis.
