The Messenger Drummond, Garfield Co., OK March 21, 1918 Page 1, column 3 OBITUARY John Wesley Ellsworth was born in Wappeto Co., Iowa, June 29th , 1845 and departed this life March 16, 1918, at the age of 72 years, 8 months and 17 days.He enlisted in the U.S. Army July 9th, 1862, and was honorably discharged July 20, 1865. He was in Company G, 18th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry.On the 12th of October, 1865, he was united in marriage to Margaret A. Johnson, and to this union were born twelve children. At the early age of 12 years, he joined the United Brethren church at Noxville, Ia., giving his life to the service of the Master, and died in perfect faith. He has been a faithful husband and a loving father. He leaves a wife, seven children, 1 brother and several grandchildren, with many friends to mourn his loss. Services were held at the Advent Christian church, the pastor, R.B. Shannon, officiating.

NOTE: John was son of Simon and Sarah Ann (Comptice) Ellsworth. Father was born in Ohio and mother in Virginia. Children of John and Margaret:

During the Civil War, John was shot through his left hand, which was not in his medical record. Fortunately, an officer testified that "...shot through the left hand, and I dressed his wound, and sent him back to the Sanitary Corps for further treatment." He was able to get additional pension for the disability.
