Sarah Henry Whittington was born in Worcester Co., MD about 1804. Sarah died 1825 at 21 years of age. She married John Gunby(Dr.) in Somerset Co., MD, November 24, 1824. John was the son of John Gunby(Gen.) and Amelia Chaille. John died after August, 1886 [possibly death circa 1874- January 1875]. In a seven-page letter he wrote August 26, 1868 [see images entered by JD], he said his wife, Sarah, died shortly after the birth of their daughter and their daughter died soon after. He said he never remarried and claimed he was "traveling about so much the girls have not a chance to catch me." (notes from original letter by Chip White)

Mrs. Gunby’s husband, Dr. Gunby, left three thousand dollars for the purpose of building a church edifice at Stockton plus two thousand dollars invested with interest towards the purpose of paying a minister of the Gospel. See probate record image, 1875, Coshocton, Ohio.

In 1868 Dr. Gunby wrote a letter detailing as best he could his Gunby family history. Available from the Worcester County Library, they are copied to this memorial. Open to interpretation, the first two Worcester pages, see images, appear to be probate papers of Dr. Gunby. The additional papers are Dr. Gunby’s letter to a John W. Gunby.

Online sources and Dr. Gunby’s memorial list his death in 1886; however, additional sources suggest a death circa 1874-January 1875: Gunby will probate, 22 Jan 1875, Coshocton, Ohio, and The Coshocton Age (Coshocton, Ohio), 1875 February 19, newspaper article reporting that Dr. John Gunby had died within the year. All information presented for reader perusal and consideration.
