Charles went to Olivet College in Michigan and graduated from Mayhew's Business College. He worked for the Michigan Central Railway for a few years. He established a sheetmetal works business and opened a factory in 1907 to manufacture sheetmetal. On 6 Oct 1881, he married Miss Lillias Walker of Detroit, who died 14 Jan 1892 leaving son, Arthur and daughter, Margaret. He married again on 2 Sep 1896 to Miss Jane M. Miller of Grand Rapids, MI, a native of Scotland.
