Born July 12, 1937, in Seymour, he was the son of Lawrence Aaron and Velva (Childers) Abell.
He married Mary (Haines) Abell on November 9, 1958, at the Hayden Methodist Church; she survives.
Mr. Abell graduated from Cortland High School in 1955 and served in the United States Air Force. He worked for the Cummins Engine Company in Columbus doing maintenance, inspection, and general repair for 40 years before retiring in 1995 in addition to farming. He was a member of the Diesel Workers Union and the Rock Shadows Horseshoe Club in Apache Junction, Arizona. He enjoyed farming, raising and racing horses, playing cards, horseshoes, and old tractors.
Surviving with his wife, Mary Abell of Scipio, is his son, David (Kim) Abell of North Vernon; sisters, Betty Moorman of Cortland and Kathryn Carr of Columbus; and grandchildren, Amanda Sue Abell and Shawn David Abell, both of North Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Velva Abell, and sister, Martha Norris.
A funeral service for Mr. Abell will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Marvin Wright officiating. Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.
