24th Mayor of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born in Upper Canada, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1865. He then entered politics and served two terms as Chairman of the Public Library Board, and in 1876 he ran successfully for a seat on the Toronto City Council. In 1882, he entered the mayoral race and ran against Toronto City Alderman John Jacob Withrow. A tough opponent, Withrow was instrumental in bringing Toronto's first industrial fair to fruition in 1879, and the Withrow Park in the Riverdale neighborhood of Toronto is named in his honor. Boswell went onto win the election by only five votes, and he served as mayor from January 1883 to January 1885. He only served one term as mayor and he did not seek reelection. He lastly served as Superintendent of Insurance for Ontario and Registrar of Loan Companies in 1911. He was also a distinguished member of the Orange Order in Canada, or The Grand Orange Lodge of British America which is a Protestant fraternal organization that began in County Armagh, Ireland in 1795. It has played a large part in the history of Canada, with many prominent members including four Prime Ministers, amongst them Sir John A. Macdonald and John Diefenbaker, as well as Tommy Douglas, founder of the New Democratic Party. Boswell passed away from pneumonia and was buried in his native Cobourg.
