Mr. Caldwell was born January 1, 1938, in Meriwether County, son of the late James Leroy (Jay) Caldwell and Lucy Key Caldwell. He served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman in Germany before returning to make his home in Meriwether County, where he retired as a building contractor and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. Ray was an avid hunter and loved being outdoors, whether for work or for recreation.
He is survived by his brother in-law, J. B. Sowell of Lake City; a niece and four nephews, including Susan Kyte and her husband Wallace of Forsyth and Jim Sowell and his wife Donna Faye of Lilburn.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 8, at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.
