OBITUARY:
In Memory of Darrell L. Ferris February 26, 1926 - September 13, 2013
Darrell La Dean Ferris was born in Villisca, Iowa on February 26, 1926 to his parents, Alta and Robert Ferris. He died on September 13th, 2013, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was the third of six children, raised on a farm outside of Ft. Madison, Iowa. In February of 1942, the Ferris Family moved to Denver, Colorado, where most have resided since. He attended elementary, junior and high schools, attaining a GED.
On 22 March 1943, Darrell volunteered to serve his country as a member of the United States Navy and was Honorably Discharged 25 February 1946. He survived numerous campaigns, island assaults and battles across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. On the USS Tennessee, he endured a direct kamikaze attack that blew him from his hammock and burned him badly. He carried a small piece of that aircraft that had landed in his lap that night with him for the rest of his life.
He married the love of his life, Charlotte Z. Adams, on 2 February 1952 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Together, raised two sons, Darrell Lyn and Scott Lyle Ferris. These boys are married to their loves of their lives, Karen and Kim. There are three grandsons, Scott Lyle, Jr, Dustin Lavell and Garrett Landry Ferris that survive their Grandfather.
Darrell joined Troop 10 of the Boy Scouts in 1937 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He loved ALL things about hiking, camping and trekking. In Wichita Falls, he became active as a Scoutmaster for Troop 202 at Fain Elementary School. He was known for being able to take anyone who wanted to be a Scout and getting them on their way. He made two trips to Philmont Scout Ranch and walked them both. Darrell worked for over 30 years for the U.S. Government performing the duties of instruction, course design and supervision of class for telecommunications equipment specialist for the United States Air Force.
Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in the chapel of Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.
