Augusta Amelia “Gussie” (Schiebe) Peterson Owens

Augusta Amelia Owens, a lifelong resident and retired postmaster of Anatone, died early Friday morning of causes related to age at Tri-State Convalescent Center at Clarkston. She was 94.

She was born Oct. 30, 1894, to John Henry and Elizabeth Johanna (Huber) Schiebe on Weisenfells Ridge near Anatone. She attended the Weisenfells Ridge School and graduated from Asotin High School in 1916.

Following graduation, she received a teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was at the Mallory Ridge School. Following that she taught at Pine Grove School, northwest of Anatone.

On Aug. 25, 1918, she married Edward Peterson at Anatone. The Petersons lived in the Grande Ronde River area and also farmed west of Anatone. Her husband died on March 4, 1944.

She was the cook at the Anatone School for several years. She was appointed Anatone Postmaster Feb. 16, 1953.

She married Wilbur "Webb" Owens at Anatone Aug. 1, 1955.

She retired as Anatone Postmaster on March 1, 1969, and operated the library for several years at Anatone.

Her second husband, died Feb. 1, 1977.

Mrs. Owens was a member of the United Methodist Church at Anatone, the Anatone Friendship Club., Anatone Grange, and the Rebekah Club.

She enjoyed reading, gardening, crocheting, and crafts.

Survivors include three daughters, Joy Davis, Dorothy Blevins, and Selma Vantrease, all of Clarkston; step-daughter, Phyllis Acree of Lewiston; two stepsons, Robert Owens of Kamiah and Frank Owens of Clarkston; two brothers, Sidney Schiebe of Lewiston and Lawrence Schiebe of Seattle; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Two Sisters and four brothers died previously.
