Raymond J. Ackerman passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 6, 2019, a day before his 101st birthday. He was born January 7, 1918, in Morton, IL to John H. and Louise (Habeger) Ackerman. He married Margaret Augustin on September 18, 1948 in Mackinaw, IL. They were married for 70+ years.
Surviving are the love of his life, wife, "Margie"; his children, Cinda (Kim) Klickna of Rochester, Karen (Randy) Witter of Springfield, and Randall (Jenny Poyer) of Alamo, CA; seven grandchildren, Keith Klickna of Orlando, FL, Kevin Klickna (Paula) of Rochester, Dorothy Copfer (Zachary) of Cincinnati, OH, John Witter of Fresno, CA, Alex, Nathan and Caroline Ackerman, of Alamo, CA; and one great-granddaughter, Anna Mae Copfer.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Clyde Ackerman, Marie Rathe and Iola Ackerman.
He graduated from Morton Township High School and received a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1943. He was a member of Triangle Fraternity and Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society.
Ray was a U.S. veteran, proudly serving in the Merchant Marines in the Pacific and Atlantic war zones during WWII. He went on the Honor Flight in 2012. Ray retired in 1980 after 30 years of service as a Civil Engineer with the IL Department of Transportation. He worked in the Peoria district office from 1950 until moving to the central office in Springfield in 1963. He was credited with innovative transportation design features when the interstate system was created. He conducted the original survey for the Murray Baker Bridge at Peoria. He was also a registered Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor.
Ray was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers, Illinois and National Societies of Professional Engineers, Illinois Association of Highway Engineers, U of I Alumni Association, Retired State Employees Association and Springfield Motor Boat Club. He received the Loyalty Award from the U of I Alumni Association in 1996 and the Distinguished Service Award from ISPE Capital Chapter in 2015. He was a member of Laurel United Methodist Church.
Ray was devoted to his family. He loved sports and was a card-carrying die-hard Cubs fan since 1928. He was also a life-long Illini fan. Ray was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, water and snow skiing, and family vacations. He was a multiple gold medal award winner in the Senior Olympics. He shared his love of adventure with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, Springfield. An additional visitation will be held on Monday, January 14, 2019 from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. at Laurel United Methodist Church, 631 South Grand Avenue West, Springfield. Funeral Ceremony immediately following at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Kent Lolling officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with military honors provided by the Department of Defense.
