Long Strides Forward
More than medical science has made phenomenal progress in the United States in the past three-quarters of a century. The national economy has done the same thing.
This is illustrated by the longtime medical career of Dr. Joseph David Heacock of Birmingham, who celebrated his 101st birthday the past Saturday, May 23.
Born in Talladega on May 23, 1869, Dr. Heacock engaged in the active practice of medicine for about 70 years. Several members of congress, including Rep. Jack Edwards of Mobile, commented on his remarkable career.
The remarks of Rep. John Buchanan of Birmingham pointed up the vast economic change which has taken place in this country since Dr. Heacock became a member of the medical profession:
“When he began practicing medicine in the East Lake section of Birmingham in 1896, fees often consisted of such things as a bushel of corn or a chicken.”
Also, “In 1904, Dr. Heacock traded the saddle horse and buggy-puller with which he had begun his practice for an automobile.”
Economically, as in medicine, the nation has moved a long way forward in the twentieth century.
