Actress. One of the most prominent performers in the former German Democratic Republic, her career spanned seven decades on the stage and in films. The daughter of a quarry owner, she began to study acting at a young age and made her debut in November 1942 at the Kurfürstendamm Theater.
During World War II she lost her exempt status and was conscripted for the Reich Labor Service but avoided it when she entered into a sham marriage. Following the war, she returned to act in Freiberg, then at the Soviet Occupation Zone. In 1948, she moved to the Hebbel Theater in Kreuzberg, West Berlin. And later to the Schlosspark Theater in Steglitz, where she received her first major role, that of 'Waltraut "Putzchen" von Mohrungen' in "The Devil's General."
In 1950 she moved to East Berlin where she joined the Deutsches Theater and remained a member of the ensemble for fifty years, appearing in such notable roles as 'Eliza Doolittie' in "Pygmalion" (1952), 'Emilia' in "Othello" (1953), 'Goneril' in "King Lear" (1957), 'Masha' in "Three Sisters" (1960), and 'Iphigenia' in "Iphigenia in Tauris" (1963). Among her notable films include "The Council of the Gods" (1950), "Aimee & Jaguar" (1999), and "Lola and Billy the Kid" (1999).
From 1952-1956 she was married to Eduard von Schnitzler, who later would become one of the most well-liked/hated TV moderators, infamous in former East-Germany for his communist propaganda program "Der Schwarze Kanal".
Inge Keller's honors and awards include the Art Prize of the German Democratic Republic (1960), the National Prize of East Germany (1961 and 1977), the Golden Orange Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Lola and Billy the Kid" (1999), the Caroline Neuber Prize of the City of Leipzig (2000), and the Order of Merit of Berlin (2006). She died in her sleep at the age of 93.
